Sand versus cartridge filtration

How sand and cartridge filters differ in operation, cleaning and water use — and what to consider when choosing.

Both types remove suspended particles from pool water. They differ mainly in the filter medium and how it is cleaned.

Sand filters

Water passes down through a bed of graded filter sand (for example #20 silica sand) and leaves through laterals at the bottom of the tank.

  • Cleaning: by backwashing — reversing the flow to lift and flush trapped dirt to waste, controlled by a multiport valve.
  • Water use: backwashing sends pool water to drain, so a suitable waste connection is needed and the pool must be topped up.
  • Maintenance: the sand is replaced periodically, following the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Typical fit: widely used for residential and commercial pools. Our sand range includes SwimPro® Hi-Rate and Powerline™ PL filters.

Cartridge filters

Water passes through a pleated fabric cartridge inside the filter housing.

  • Cleaning: the cartridge is removed and hosed down, rather than backwashed.
  • Water use: no backwash water, which can help where water or drainage is limited.
  • Fineness: cartridge media generally capture finer particles than a standard sand bed.
  • Maintenance: cartridges need regular manual cleaning and periodic replacement, and access to remove them.

Questions to decide between them

  1. Is there a drain or waste line suitable for backwash water?
  2. Who will maintain the equipment, and how often?
  3. What flow rate does the system need? The filter must handle it at the manufacturer's design rate.
  4. Is plant-room space or access a constraint?

Our cartridge range is the SwimClear™ single-element filter, in 100, 150 and 200 ft² sizes. Not sure which type suits your pool? Tell us the flow rate and pipe size.
