Information needed to select a pump and filter

What to send us so we can suggest suitable circulation and filtration equipment for your pool.

A pump and filter can only be matched properly when we know how the pool is built and used. The more of this information you send, the more useful our suggestion will be.

About the pool

  • Pool type and use: private residential, hotel, club, school or public pool. Commercial and public pools often have stricter design requirements.
  • Size: length, width and the shallow and deep water depths, or a drawing. If you know the volume, include it — or use our pool volume calculator.
  • Turnover target: the time in which the full volume should pass through the filter. This is set by the pool designer and any standard that applies to the project.
  • Features: spa, jets, water features, overflow or infinity edges, heat pump or salt chlorinator. Each changes the flow and equipment needed.

About the pipework and plant room

  • Suction and return pipe sizes, and approximate pipe run lengths between the pool and the plant room.
  • The number of skimmers, main drains (suction outlets) and inlets.
  • Whether the pump will sit above or below the pool water level, and the height difference.
  • Plant-room space and access for installation and servicing.

About the site

  • Electrical supply available: single phase or three phase. Equipment for India must suit 50 Hz supply.
  • Delivery city and any deadlines.
  • For a replacement, the existing equipment's model numbers and photos — see the replacement checklist.

How filter sizing is checked

A filter is compared on its filtration rate: the flow through the filter divided by its filtration area. The result is checked against the manufacturer's design rate. For example, our catalogue lists the SwimPro® Hi-Rate filters at a design rate of 20 gpm per ft² of filtration area.

What our suggestion is — and is not

We suggest suitable models from the information you give us, with their catalogue data. This is not a hydraulic design. The final pump selection must be checked by the project's designer or contractor against the pump's performance curve and the system's total head, which depends on the actual pipework.
